Hometown Landscape in Oils

Last weekend I got out my oil paints for the first time in months.  I was almost scared that I had forgotten how to paint in oils, but once I got going, it came back to me quickly. Thank goodness!

This is my second version of the pond I grew up around in rural Arizona.  I can't decide if I like the watercolor or the oil version better.

Which do you like best?

  1. What a beautiful view to live by Elise.. :) I like both the versions but I think the oil painting is a win win on water painting..
    Have a great weekend!

  2. Hmmm. Hard choice. I like the look of watercolors better than oils, but I really like how the water looks in the oil one. You and Linz are making me homesick with your photos/paintings of SJ. :)

  3. They are both lovely but I prefer the oil version. I am a fan of saturated color. When I do watercolor I tend towards "too much" and I have to learn the subtlety that you show in your art. Doesn't it feel good to be painting again?

  4. I love the watercolour. I think I prefer the muted colour of watercolour. I will be joining your blog so that I can come back and look at the older posts

  5. Both pictures are beautiful, but I love the watercolour more. Its colours are softer, love the way you played with lights. And just because aquarelles are closer to my heart :)

  6. Beautiful picture.

I have been thinking for about 3-4 years of starting to paint once again and yesterday took the first plunge. Bought oils, brushes and canvas so am on my way. It has been about 45 years since I have done any oil painting so this is going to be almost like learning over again.

Now I have retired I am sure I will get lots of enjoyment from painting again.

  7. very pretty. I've always wanted to try oils.

  8. I love both. Each is unique in its own way.
